Serina Volume 0, Chapter 5

Chapter 5 - The First Slime

I suggested that we should talk about how we should live in this world, but Alec was the first one to refuse and went away.

Shin also wanted to go around the store, and Kojima-sensei said he'd go back to the castle to check it out, so in the end it was just the three of us, me, Erwin, and Keiji.

"I've played this kind of game before, but I think it's better to form a party at first."

Erwin said, but I've never really played this kind of game. I mean, is this world a game world?

The thought of it boggles my mind.

"When you say 'party,' do you mean 'team'?"

"Yeah, that."

 The blond-haired Erwin smiles gently.

"As the king said, we have to defeat the monsters. I have to level up. Ouch."

Keija says as he pats his own hip, but the spot where he was kicked still seems to be sore.

"Are you okay? Keiji-kun."

"I'm fine, I'm fine! I just checked my status and my HP is still half of what it should be, so I'm totally fine!"

He smiled, and the tweety-headed Keiji-kun seemed to be okay with this. His clothes are stained with dirt, though.

"This HP thing, if it drops to zero, you die in the game, right?"

I thought it was an important point, so I checked with two people who seemed to know a lot about the game.

"Yeah! That's right."

"In a normal game, yes."

 The two of them nodded.

"Then, I guess I'd better check my status from time to time and watch out for my HP."

"Hmm, that's not a problem! Even if you don't pay attention to it, you'll know when your HP is low because you'll feel like dying."

"I hope you're right. ......"

"What do you think? There should be a potion on sale that will restore your HP. Let's get some of that first."

 Erwin suggested.

"I agree!"

"I agree. Let's see if they have any potions."

We walked around the town looking for a store, but it was still a medieval European style town. There were no asphalt paved streets. Most of the buildings were two-story wooden structures with distorted pillars and planks, which made me feel that the construction techniques were rough.

"Ah, I found it! Erwin! Serina-neechan! There's a tool shop! This way, this way!"

The energetic Keiji waved his hand in front of a store with a bag sign. I headed over to it, and sure enough, it looked like a tool store, with all kinds of sundries on display.

"Uncle, do you have any potions?"

"Yes, those blue bottles are it. They cost ten gold each, but since you're such a pretty girl, I'll give you for eight gold."

"Thank you. But they're a bit expensive. The money we got from the king was about a hundred gold, right? We have to pay for the inn, so we can't buy a lot."

"Are you the young ladies, a hero? Well, if you're just starting out, you can use the herbs there. It's only two gold a bunch there."

"They're cheap, but do they restore HP?"

"Yes, it does. If you have a minor injury, just drink it or crush it on the wound and it will heal quickly."

The uncle of the tool shop said confidently.

"Hee~. Well, I'll take about five bunches of this, please."

"Thank you for your patronage. That's eight gold in total."

The total should be ten gold, but it looks like he'll lower the price too. Come to think of it, I have [Price Reduction] as one of my skills, but maybe it's an effect of this.

"Hee, so these are medicinal herbs? It's just ordinary grass. Munch!"

"Oh, hey!"

I was startled when Keiji suddenly ate it straight out of the bag.

"Ugh, it's bitter. This doesn't taste good!"

"Hahaha, that's because good medicine is bitter in the mouth. You guys, if you don't have leather bags, go buy some too. There are medicinal herbs growing outside the forest, so if you bring them back, we'll buy them for you."

"Wow. Thanks for the tip, Uncle!"

"Leather bags are the cheapest, so I recommend for eight gold a bags, and water bags."

He's a kind man, but he's also a good businessman. We took his advice and bought a bag each.

"Keiji, has your HP increased?"

Erwin asked as we exited the store.

"Wait. Status! Open!"

For some reason, Keiji-kun shouts in an embarrassing Sentai drama-style pose, so I decide to turn away and pretend to be someone else just then.

"Ooooh! It's increased! Erwin, Serina-neechan! My HP is full!"

"I see. That's good. It looks like it's working."

"I guess so. Then, let's fill the water bag with water from the well there, and go look for herbs."

"No, no, we're going to kill the slime, Serina-neechan."

"What? That's a monster, right?"

I know what slime is. It's the weakest enemy that comes out in the beginning of the game.

"That's right!"

But I'm not sure if we can defeat it. That's what I'm worried about.

"I think we'll be fine. If it comes to it, we can just run back to the city and see how it feels."

That's what Erwin said, so we headed out of the city.

"Hey, are you guys planning to go outside with that equipment?"

There was a soldier in armor standing at what looked like the entrance to the city.

"That's right, but ......"

"Do you have your adventurer cards? Let me see it, all three of you."

"Sure, here you go."

I take out the adventurer's card I've just been issued from my clothes pocket. It's laminated, and this is the only card that's rather modern.

"Hmm. Level 1, huh ....... Well, at least buy some leather armor. And don't go into the woods. Amateurs like you won't be able to defeat the monsters in the forest."

"I understand. I'll buy some more later."

"If you don't have any money, that's fine, but you're only as good as your life."

The soldier was worried about us, but considering the cost of lodging, we can't shop too much before we've saved up enough money.

The soldier didn't say anything more and let us pass.

Once outside the walls surrounding the city, we saw an unpaved road leading straight to a grassy field, with a large wheat field on the right side of the road, with a forest in the distance.

"Hmph, we'll see about that. I'll be strong soon and scare that old man!"

It's good that you're so motivated, but it backfired on you at the Adventurer's Guild.

"There it is, the slime!"

Erwin found the slime surprisingly quickly. I hurriedly drew my bronze longsword from its scabbard and readied myself.

In the grass, a translucent lump of jelly was moving as if it was crawling on the ground, and I was sure that it was a monster.

"Let me do it! Teiyaa!"

As soon as Keiji said that, he pulled out his sword and slashed at it. The slime that was struck from above with great force made a cracking sound and crumbled on the spot. Then, just like when a ninja disappears, it turns into a cloud of smoke and finally vanishes without a trace.

"Hooray!"

"Well done!"

"It's strange."

I've heard from the king that monsters turn to smoke when defeated, but I wonder how it works?

"What a piece of cake! Erwin... Let's keep killing them!"

"No, let's collect the herbs first. It looks like we can make some money."

 Erwin rejected Keiji-kun suggestion.

"Eehh, I want to kill the monsters."

"Then we can kill them when we find them, but let's do it while we collect the herbs."

I know how you feel, so I've come up with a compromise.

"All right! When you find the slime, you both have to tell me!"

"Sure, sure, okay."

Erwin and I smiled at each other, and we walked in search of medicinal herbs.

"The sun is starting to set. Let's head back to the city soon."

"Yes, we should. We've gathered a lot of herbs."

"Yeah!"

At first I wondered what was going to happen, but it looks like we're going to make it.

When we got back to town, we went to a tool shop to buy some herbs and then decided to look for an inn.
