Chapter 4 - The Western Tower
After being bought a drink by Sylvie at the tavern, we set out the next day in the morning for the western tower.
Sylvie asked us to help her with her research, but Alec refused.
Sylvie was angry that he was still a heroes, but Alec said that he didn't want to work overtime. I don't know about this kind of thing, but I should probably give Sylvie some information.
「So, Sylvie, why are you following us?」
Alec asks, turning around.
The silver-haired elf answered with a cool face.
「You told me yesterday that you were going to the West Tower, didn't you? I just thought I'd check it out.」
「You don't have to work with us, though.」
「That's true, but ...... well, the journey is a journey and the world is a mercy, and if you get attacked along the way, I'll help you, so count on me.」
「Alec, that's good. She seem to have a good skills, and we can party together.」
I say in agreement. Sylvie is a member of the Order, which is like a police force in our world. It's the hero's duty to cooperate.
「No party. Sylvie, I won't help you if you're attacked, but I don't care.」
「Of course not. I'll follow you on my own. I have no complaints.」
「Fine, but don't fight.」
That's all I'm going to say.
「You do.」
「Ehh? Geez ......」
We made our way through the forest.
Visibility was poor, so we had to pay attention to the sounds around us.
「Uh-oh. Uh-oh.」
「Mount Ape's close by. What do we do?」
We're on our way to the west tower. It will depend on our leader's policy whether we fight here or not.
「Let's hunt them down. It's not like we're in a hurry.」
「Yeah, okay.」
Two gorillas attacked Sylvie, but she buried them before they could take the mount position. She's certainly good at it, though.
「Murghh, that's not fair, it's just me. ......」
I'm not happy with the way I was treated the other day.
I was hoping for a few more of them to come out, but they were out of the forest.
Sylvie pointed to the other side.
「I see it. That's the west tower.」
「Ho~.....」
「Hee~......」
There was a large tower standing there, as if looking up at the sky.
I couldn't see it from the capital, but it seemed to be in the shadow of a mountain. It's about twenty stories tall, judging by the number of windows. Even so, its width was more than a hundred meters, giving it a strong presence.
The walls of the tower were made of reddish-bronze stone with vertical columns, and a steel door was visible in the center of the first floor.
「Was this tower built by the Kingdom of Vernia?」
A vertical, large-scale tower like this must be a little difficult to build with medieval technology. Alec confirmed this point to Sylvie.
「No, it's not. This was built three hundred years ago, before the time of the first king. I've heard it's been around since the time of the gods.」
「It's amazing. Who the hell is ......」
「I wonder if it's a god. To which god, I don't know either.」
「There's no point in staring at it. Let's go inside.」
Alec says, as I look on in admiration.
「Yeah, right.」
This was no time to be gawking.
「Ahh.」
「「 Yes」」
「Yup.」
At the front of the line were Meena and Sylvie, on either side were me and Ione, in the middle was Lily, and at the back was Alec.
We stepped into the tower through the open door.
「It's a maze after all.」
I said, looking at the passage inside. I had expected this, but it seems to be a labyrinth as well.
The walls inside are also made of stone, but this one is gray. The passageway was about three meters wide and continued onward.
The passageway branched off and bent in the middle, so I couldn't see beyond that point.
「I can remember the way to the tenth floor.」
Sylvie said. But since our goal is to raise our level, we won't be able to just keep going up.
「We'll decide the way. If there are any dangerous traps, let me know then.」
「Understood.」
「Let's start from the left.」
「Yes, Master.」
「Copy that.」
Turn left down the aisle and proceed. Immediately, Meena drew her sword and prepared herself.
「I smell goblins.」
「There are three of them.」
「Yeah. Keep going.」
Goblins would be a piece of cake. But the goblins here all had iron armor and shields.
I was taken aback as Meena's sword bounced off its shield and cut into the opposite side.
「Ha!」
But Meena quickly ducked and slashed the goblin's neck from behind.
「Gah!?」
The goblin stiffens and falls headfirst onto its back. The remaining two goblins had already been killed by Sylvie and Ione.
「We're all safe.」
I checked, but everyone has not taken damage.
「So there are goblins in iron armor, huh? I've seen leather armor before, but ......」
I poked at the one piece of iron armor that had fallen on the spot with the tip of my sword to check it out. The inside had already turned to smoke and there was nothing left inside.
It didn't seem to be one of those mysterious drop items that monsters sometimes drop. The rusty iron armor must have belonged to an adventurer who had challenged this place in the past.
「The enemies here are stronger than most. Be careful.」
Sylvie said. I guess we'd better brace ourselves.
The recommended level by the Adventurer's Guild is 25 or higher, and Alec and Meena are still about eight levels short. However, I heard that the enemies get stronger and stronger from the upper floors, so we should be okay until we reach the middle of the floor.
The only enemies on the first floor were goblins and slimes, and although their shields and armor sometimes prevented our attacks from getting through, it wasn't too much of a hardship.
After about three hours of walking around, Alec suggested that we have lunch.
「It's time to eat. Let's go outside.」
「If that's the case, there's a small room right around the corner. The door can be closed, so we can rest there safely.」
Sylvie said, so we went to the small room in the tower and closed the door. The goblins are strangely unable to open this door.
Apparently there are resting places like this on every floor.
We unloaded our backpacks and had a simple lunch of bread and cheese. I'd like some onion soup or potage soup if possible.
「What's on this top floor?」
Alec asked Sylvie, biting into a piece of bread.
「There is a boss monster called the Mad Orc. He doesn't come out of the boss room, so as long as you stay away from him, you're fine.」
Mad Orc. I felt a shiver run down my spine when I heard that name.
『'It's bad, isn't it?』
So that's who Heruko says is bad. ......
「Is he strong?」
Alec asked..
「Strong. Even I can't beat it. The captain has beaten him once, but every few years, someone comes along to beat him.」
So, I guess it's the type of boss that tends to come back again and again, like in video games.
「Do you want to challenge him?」
I asked, even though I knew Alec wouldn't challenge it.
「Nonsense. We're not even at the guild's recommended level, and the rewards won't be that good.」
「No, they say that the bosses drop a good amount of rare items. But, well, there are a lot of parties that lose their lives, so it's better not to.」
Sylvie warned us, but I guess we'll have to level up more.
And then Lily started to swaying.
「Hey, can I come outside?」
「No, you can't. What's wrong?」
「Hmmm, I have to pee.」
Alec had done his business before entering the tower, but Lily should have gone with him. I thought about it, but then Alec said something ridiculous.
「I can't allow it. Just leak on your pants.」
「Eehh!?」
「Hey! What are you saying? I'll go with you, Lily.」
「Thank you, Serina.」
「No, there's a bathroom in this tower. I'll show you.」
Sylvie told me about it.
「How close is it?」
「Right there, just around the corner.」
「Then, if you see any enemies on the way, just give up, Lily.」
「Don't wanna. Just hurry up! I'm leaking.」
「You know, nothing good happens in a hurry.」
That's true, but Alec's too delirious.
「Here we are.」
We were lucky enough to reach another small room without encountering any enemies. On the door, someone had apparently put a wooden sign afterwards that said "Toilet".
We tried to peek inside, but Lily, who had slipped in beside Alec, quickly closed the door.
I'll wait.
「Phew, I made it in time. ......」
I looked inside again and saw a stone toilet bowl.
「I wonder if it flushes. ......」
I'm curious.
「No problem. The water spirit will clean it up on its own.」
Sylvie said, but .......
「Hmm, is that so ......」
I'm not sure how water spirits work, but if you have some sort of cleaning tool, it's safe.
「Okay, what about the others?」
「Oh, well, excuse me, but ......」
Ione raised her hand in a reserved manner.
「All right.」
「Yeah, I'll hold on to this guy for you, don't worry.」
Then I grabbed Alec's wrist.
「That's you. I'm not going to peek at her.」
「I wonder which mouth will say with that skill set.」
This guy even has [Peeping Tom Level 1].
「Look here, I just took this one with [Skill Copy].」
「But you can reset it with [Skill Reset].」
「Well, maybe it'll be useful for something.」
「Pervert.」
Alec doesn't give a shit about my abuse. geez.
「Sorry to keep you waiting.」
「All right, let's go.」
She finished her business and went back to exploring. If there's a bathroom, I guess we can explore this dungeon for a long time without going back to the inn as long as we bring food.
Well, I'd rather sleep in a bed at night and take a hot bath, so it's better to go back to the town than to sleep in a place like this.
