Serina Volume 4, Chapter 12

Chapter 12 - The Magic School

In the back room, there was a stone altar with a stern-looking old man in a purple-blue robe.

「Murghh, it's been a long time since I saw a talented young man of course」

「Ah, sensei, the little dog-eared girl over there is the only one who wants to change jobs.」

「What? You and the red-haired girl, isn't that you?」

It seems that Alec and I have seen through our abilities, but so far, we have no plans to change jobs.

「No, just her.」

「What a waste. Well, if you change your mind, you can come visit us again. Now, little girl, go to this altar and pray to the god of magic」

「U-uh, ......」

「Just pray to him to make you a mage.」

 Alec says.

「Y-yes.」

Nene kneels down, folds her hands, closes her eyes, and starts praying like she's desperate.

「Huh?」

Nene-chan opens her eyes and looks around left and right, she seems to have heard the voice of God.

「Mm, it seems to have worked. Now, go on with your quest.」

「Ah, ....... T-thank you very much!」

Nene-chan, who bowed with a bang, seemed to have wanted to become a magician once.

It's a girl's dream to be a magical girl, after all!

The lady at the reception desk saw this and smiled at her.

「That's great. Then, the next step is to get an introduction to a master of magic or a magic school.」

「Let me know the details.」

Even though Alec was a bit of a bother, he seemed to be willing to listen to the explanation. It's better to do a thorough research about your career path.

「Sure. This way, please.」

We'll sit and listen in the other room.

「I'll explain it to you. First, the most common way is to be taught by a mage teacher. This is because you will need a recommendation even if you choose the magic school course, so it's better to decide. If you really want to do it for free, the Mages Guild will be your recommendation. However, we're also busy, so we can't give you a handful of guidance. Also, in that case, enrolling in a top-notch magic school would be difficult as well. What do you think?」

 A mage, or a mage's teacher?

「No, I'll pay. How much is that?」

「There's a wide range, you know. Here's the list of mages. It's expensive to become a magician, so if you have magician brother or sister, you can make them teach Nene-chan. A D-ranked mage or higher.」

She showed us the list, and I was a little surprised to see that the top price was three million gold. Considering the cost of living here, it must be around 300 million yen.

「Why is it so expensive?」

「Well, partly because there aren't many A-rank teachers, but also because everyone is busy with their own research rather than teaching, which is why the fees are so high. I also think it would be better to have more instructors, though.」

「Hmm. What level of mage would a normal guy have?」

「Well, if you're just starting out, you can often get away with using your siblings magician. But you guys are well equipped, so I guess you're a B-rank party?」

「No, the only one with a B-rank is Serina, does that make us a C rank party?」

「Hmm, I wonder if you're not certified as a party? Party rank is different from adventurer rank.」

「What, really? That's a pain in the ass.」

「FUfu, but it's almost the same as the adventurer rank, so I'm sure you guys will be a C-ranked party soon.」

「Yeah, well, I don't really care about that. Is there any advantage to this?」

「Yes, there are. It's not uncommon for quests to be limited to B-rank parties and above.」

「Is that so? I don't take many quests, so I'm not sure.」

「Ehh? Is that so. Are you a nobleman or a merchant's son?」

「No. Don't pry into my affairs.」

「Oh, yes, I'm sorry. Let's see. ...... Ah, yeah, you need a magician teacher, right? What's your budget?」

「I can give you up to 100,000 if you need it. I'd like you to introduce me to reputable teacher」

That much? It seems that Alec is serious about raising Nene-chan.

「Heee, even a slave girl you would pay that much. I'm impressed. So, let's put a B- or C-rank mage at the top of the budget and send her to a magic school?」

「What would that be like?」

「The magic school is where mage gather and those who want to improve their skills gather to study magic every day. You can learn the basics, and I recommend the Royal Academy of Magic in Austin, because they have a lot of talented mages who can compete with each other. I'm also a graduate of there. The teachers are very good at teaching, so you'll learn quickly. You can learn to use all kinds of magic.」

「Is it close by?」

「Ah, no there isn't, it's in the magical kingdom of Austin, so it's a bit far from here.」

「Then no. Not really. You can become a magician just by learning the skills, right?」

「Yes, of course. But it's better to have a systematic knowledge of magic so that you can perform magic better and become a more responsive magician. You'll also get better treatment for requests and jobs with your title.」

It sounds like a good idea for the future, but we need magicians to help us defeat monsters in the dungeon, so I'm not sure.

「Is there a magic school near here?」

 I ask.

「Yes, there is. Every country has at least one magic school in their royal capital. Grandsword Academy of Magic is not a royal school, and it's small, but it's close by.」

「So you want to send her there?」

「No, I don't really see the need for it. ...... Nene, what do you want to do?」

It was important to us that she wanted to go to the school, because forcing her to go there if she didn't want to would not motivate her.

「Well, uh, yeah. ......」

Nene also seemed unsure of what to do. Well, I guess that's what happens when you're suddenly asked to be a mage.

「Fufu, If you want to become a good magician, I recommend you to go to the school, but you don't have to decide right now. You can also enroll midway. Why don't you decide on your master first, and then consult with him while making your decision?」

「I'd like that.」

「So, um, you wanted a teacher with a good reputation, right?」

「Yeah. Someone who can teach even a beginner with great care, please.」

「Yes, yes. Oh, yes, I know it's not very thorough, but there is one teacher I can recommend. She's a genius who graduated seventh in her class from the Royal Academy of Magic in Austin. She's a rank B magician, but I'd say she's an A in terms of ability.」

「Hou? Why haven't she taken the promotion exam?」

「Well, she've taken it about three times, but she failed all of them. Her teacher didn't like her attitude when she was scolded. Her papers are also very creative and she's a bit clumsy.」

「Is that enough for you to be a teacher?」

「Yes, she taught her younger students well, so I think she's rather good at it. She doesn't want to take on any apprentices, though. But she's short of money right now, so I recommend it. Fufu.」

「Hmm.」

Alec thought about it, but if the receptionist, who seemed like a nice person, recommended it, and if she was an A-rank magician, it was a pretty good deal.

「Isn't that fine? We want to assigned A-rank magician to teach Nene-chan. How much does that teacher cost?」

 I ask.

「Well, if you pay 10,000 gold in advance, you can probably catch her.」

「No, I can't. I'll have to get an introduction once and see if it's a good fit or not, that's what I'll have to find out.」

Alec seemed to be concerned about the chemistry between the teacher and Nene. That's true too.

「Too bad. I guess I'll go with Josef then. He's C-rank, he's inexpensive, and he takes a lot of students. He has a good reputation, too.」

「Well, that's him then.」

「Okaaay, then, it's decided! The address is on this note, so you can visit him.」

「All right.」

We headed to the mage Josef's house.
